1. Old age came upon him as he descended,
And sufficed him from longing.
١. راعَهُ الشَيبُ إِذ نَزَل
وَكَفاهُ مِنَ العَذَل
2. The days of youth expired,
And play and love songs expired.
٢. وَاِنقَضَت مُدَّةُ الصِبا
وَاِنقَضى اللَهوُ وَالغَزَل
3. By my life, I have adorned it
With henna, so it faded not.
٣. قَد لَعمري دَمَلتُهُ
بِخَضابٍ فَما اِندَمَل
4. Weep for old age when it appears,
Not for the abandoned encampment and deserted dwellings.
٤. فَاِبك لِلشَّيبِ إِذ بَدا
لا عَلى الرَبعِ وَالطَلَل
5. May God unite for the leader
The bonds of kingship, so they are linked.
٥. وَصَلَ اللَهُ لِلأَمي
رِ عُرى المُلكِ فَاِتَّصَل
6. A king whose resolve is fate
And whose deeds are cycles.
٦. مَلِكٌ عَزمُهُ الزَما
نُ وَأَفَعالُهُ الدُوَل
7. A Kisra in his glory,
Sets a simile for the smiter.
٧. كِسرَوىٌّ بِمَجدِهِ
يَضرُبُ الضارِبُ المَثَل
8. And to the shade of his power,
The timid terrified takes refuge.
٨. وَإِلى طِلِّ عِزِّهِ
يَلجَأُ الخائِفُ الوَجل
9. Every creature but the Imam
Is an animal tending to his animals.
٩. كُلُّ خَلقٍ سِوى الإِما
مِ للأَنعامِهِ خَوَل
10. Would that when he was generous to me
With wealth, he was generous with a lock!
١٠. لَيتَهُ حينَ جادَ لي
بِالغِنى جادَ بِالقَفَل
