1. I have long experienced love, and learned its ways,
Testing it in secret and openly.
١. خَبَرتُ الهَوى حَتّى عَرَفتُ أُمورَهُ
وَجَرَّبتُهُ في السِرِ مِنهُ وَفي الجَهرِ
2. Neither nearness profits me, nor distance gives comfort.
In hope lie maladies, and despair brings no cure.
٢. فَلا البُعدُ يُسليني وَلا القُربُ نافِعي
وَفي الطَمَعِ الأَدواءُ وَاليَأسُ لا يُبري
