1. She had not reached full growth when her decline began,
Her loins were stripped that they might be chained.
١. فَما بَلَغَت حَتّى حَماها كَلالُها
إِذا عُرِّيَت أَصلابُها أَن تُقَيَّدا
2. You both were alike in wisdom, justice, attainment,
Firmness when a matter had been decided and executed.
٢. تَشابَهتُما حِلماً وَعَدلاً وَنائِلاً
وَحَزماً إِذا أَمرٌ أَقامَ وَأَقعَدا
3. Two souls disputed within you, this and that,
About a rootstock that had been the proudest lineage.
٣. تَنازَعتُما نَفسَينِ هَذى كَهَذِهِ
عَلى أًصل عِرقٍ كانَ أَفخَرُ مُتلَدا
4. As he measured out a Hadhrami sandal and lost it,
He was not satisfied to lavish gifts upon its mate.
٤. كَما قاسَ نَعلاً حَضرَمِيّاً فَقَدَّها
عَلى أُختها لَم يَألُ أَن يَتَجَوَّدا
5. With seventy thousand he fortified my back and garrisoned me,
Your father, and you have witnessed some of that castle.
٥. بِسَبعينَ أَلفاً شَدَّ ظَهري وَراشَني
أَبوكَ وَقَد عايَنتَ مِن ذاكَ مَشهَدا
6. Indeed I, the Commander of the Faithful, am confident
That you will not be seen as one withholding his wine.
٦. وَإِنّي أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ لَواثِقٌ
بِأَن لا يُرى شَربي لَدَيكَ مُصَرَّدا
